How To Do A Product Launch With No Product And No Email List

I started out online promoting a few different products as an affiliate, with one of them generating around 80% of my income (yeah, risky I know).

Anyhow, when that affiliate merchant made the gut wrenching (for me) decision to change the way they paid affiliates, they effectively destroyed my entire business model. That was when I decided I needed a little more control over my income, because I didn’t want to ever feel that way again.

After that experience, I started creating products of my own, and as you know, launching a product is much better than just opening up for business and hoping for the best.

The very first product launch I did was a ‘Seed Launch’, which as you’ll recall is Step 2 in our 5 Steps To A 6 Figure Product Launch process:

During that Seed Launch I created a 4 week coaching program I could sell myself, and also offer to people who purchased a related affiliate product so they could get better results.

From a tiny list, I ended up with 39 students paying $37 each go through the launch with me.

So I made the princely sum of $1443 (a little less after Paypal fees) for 4 weeks of ‘work’ which worked out to be a total of around 12 hours writing email messages and relentlessly checking my sales figures 🙂

Not really a big deal (but man was I excited at the time).

But here’s the thing…

The Seed Launch allowed me to get paid up front to create the product (so I knew there was demand before I spent any time or money on it)

– It was fun and I learned a lot about what customers really wanted and needed (doing what you enjoy while actually helping people is nice)

– It helped me to bond with people in my audience at a much deeper level (some of the people who went through the Seed Launch became raving fans and bought all kinds of other stuff from for years)

Plus…

Having that completed product enabled me to sell it, or give it away as a bonus to EVERY person who purchased that affiliate product through my affiliate link.

And that (along with a small amount of personal email coaching) helped me to make thousands of dollars in affiliate commissions from that product every single month for more than 4 years…

…until the merchant changed their affiliate program rules and killed the thing dead (there’s a long, sad story of ineptitude and stupidity on their part; I’ll tell you about that another day…).

So that’s one way to use a Seed Launch, but there are lots of others.

Here’s just 3 ideas:

– If you sell any kind of physical product, you could do a Seed Launch to create a digital product or training course that helps your customers get more out of the things they buy from you, and give it away as a bonus to increase your product’s value and stand out from your competitors

– If you sell a professional service, you could create a coaching series that helps your clients get much more out of your services and sell it or give it away

– If you sell any kind of coaching, training or education, you could take your clients and students through a Seed Launch to get a deeper understanding of their needs, goals and desires, and come out with an entire new suite of programs you could offer to people in the future (or use as bonuses for your existing stuff)

Here’s The Absolute WRONG Way To Do A Product Launch

Product Launch Discount OfferAs you know, using a well planned product launch where you use pre-launch content, a sideways salesletter, and an event with a deadline to launch a new product or service is a proven way to hit the ground running with a new business.

And it’s orders of magnitude better than simply opening your doors and using what Jeff Walker calls ‘hope marketing’ to see what happens.

Unfortunately not everyone knows what we know about starting a business with a product launch as this case study shows…

And a few weeks ago, a small flyer turned up in our mailbox advertising a new Nail Salon that was opening at the local shopping centre.

It stood out among the pile of junk mail because I’d just been talking with my daughter about how great her nails looked after having them professionally done.

Now with two Nail Salon’s already in the centre, any new entrant is going to have to come up with an irresistible offer if they are going to steal a good number of customers away from those businesses.

The sad thing for this new Nail Salon was that despite spending a fortune on store fit-out, stock, equipment, rent and staff, the ‘Grand Opening Offer’ they had put together wasn’t going to do that.

In fact, their offer SUCKED…

The ’irresistible offer’ they came up with, in the face of launching a new business in an area with strong existing competition, was…

20% Off All Services

Seriously?

My first thought was that the other Salons would just match (or beat) this offer and destroy their ‘Grand Opening’…

And that’s exactly what happened.

On the new Salon’s opening day, signs went up at the other Salon’s offering 20% and 25% off.

And because lots of people had to walk right past the existing Salon’s to get to the new one, there was no compelling reason to change old habits and risk using somebody new.

What SHOULD they have done?

There are two ways to launch a new business.

The slow, expensive and usually painful way, which is trying to outspend your competitors and ‘get your brand out there’ in the hope you can overcome the natural inertia people have to changing their habits, or…

The fast, usually much less expensive and easier way, which is to remove all of the new customer’s risk and come up with an irresistible offer.

So what would be an irresistible offer I would have tested?

Maybe something like…

All Services $5 Each For 2 The Next Weeks

I would have also created a Facebook Competition offering a 1st prize of Free Nails Once Each Month For 12 Months (or even longer), and have 25 2nd prizes of 50% off vouchers or whatever.

Plus I’d give every Facebook Competition participant the ‘All services for $5’ offer, have cool free giveaways in store, a Premium Coffee cart giving away free coffee, and lots of other goodies.

Bottom Line: they should have turned the store’s opening into AN EVENT!

Creating an event does a number of important things.

  • It ensures your Salon is FULL of excited customers for at least 2 weeks.
  • It gives you a chance to introduce yourself to new clients who normally go elsewhere.
  • It hits a bunch of important mental triggers including reciprocity, liking, social proof, grabbing a bargain, urgency and scarcity, which make people LIKE you and want to come back to your store.
  • And it starts to change people’s habits if they are get great service and an enjoyable experience when they visit.

Now to capitalise on the goodwill you are creating during your ‘launch’, you could give everybody who books the $5 service a discount coupon for their next visit so they come back again.

And on their second visit, give them another (slightly lower) discount coupon to get them back a third time.

It’s statistically proven that once people have visited your new store 3 times, there’s a great chance they will come back over and over again unless you do something to damage the relationship.

And THAT’S how you ‘launch’ a new brick and mortar business quickly, in a competitive market, without going broke spending a fortune on marketing, and waiting for customers to slowly ‘bleed’ over to you from the existing competitors.

 But what if you’re not starting a brand new business?

That’s great!

You can use this same process to launch a new product or service, or re-launch an existing product, or hold a sale, or whatever you want to use it for to get more sales.

And the easiest way to know what to launch or re-launch is to ASK your existing customers what they’d most like to buy from you

Inside Jeff Walker’s Product Launch Formula Launch

You may have been watching Jeff Walker’s Product Launch Formula from the point of view of a current or potential customer, but as an affiliate of Jeff’s, I’d like to share some of the inside goss on what’s been going on behind the scenes.

The bottom line is that even though people have been using PLF to launch products and services since around 2008, and many people say the ‘launch model’ is dying or dead, Jeff’s been totally nailing it with this current launch so far.

He’s now delivered just about TEN HOURS of content… and people are freaking out at the quality + quantity + experience.

I’ve watched and participated in a LOT of launches, and I’ve never seen people as excited as Jeff’s folks are with this current prelaunch.
